185/65 R15: how to read your tire size
Four marks on the sidewall are enough to find the right tire.
185
width (mm)
/
65
sidewall (% of width)
R
radial
15
rim (inches)
The size is written on the sidewall of each tire, for example 185/65 R15. It is usually also on a label in the driver’s door frame or in the service booklet.
What each number means
- 185: the tire width, in millimetres
- 65: the sidewall height, as a percentage of the width
- R: radial construction, used by almost all car tires
- 15: the rim diameter, in inches
Right after come the load index and the speed rating (for example 88H). When in doubt, keep the original ones.
